Thursday was EP 47 & 48 while Friday screened the final episode EP 49 of Ancient Love Poetry on Tencent (for VIPs).
Last week when Shang Gu wakes up (EP 43), her memory after Jiu You (the place she trained for a thousand years) was all gone (taken away by Hei Jue). Yuan Qi has grown up into a very smart boy and Tian Qi told him to not call Shang Gu mother as she doesn’t remember a thing.
The first moment Shang Gu woke up (where we are a hundred years after Hou Chi is gone), she and Yuan Qi sneaked to Hei Jue’s residence and that below is how they met again – thanks to Yuan Qi’s prank.
Now that Hei Jue realised that Shang Gu has woken up, he sneaked to her residence (Qing Chi Gong) to see them too, but got caught by Tian Qi. Tian Qi allowed him to go in and sneak a peek at them sleeping. (Note: he’s wearing grey below, not black, a differentiation by the production when he’s concerned with Shang Gu and Yuan Qi.)
There’s also a scene that many would celebrate and probably only Shang Gu can do it which is to put Wu Huan in her place.
The above was at Donghua’s birthday celebration – always an event that lets everyone see Hou Chi / Shang Gu for who she is.
And then after a series of events, Wu Huan kept killing innocent lives to train up her demonic powers and she could no longer hide it as Mu Guang finally found out. So she revealed her true colours in front of her family.
Shortly after, she went to kill Tian Qi by transforming herself as Yue Mi. As Tian Qi passed on, rain and storm came. Shang Gu was worried. Secondly, Wu Huan sent her daughter Jing Zhao to poison Hei Jue and then she also killed Hei Jue. When Hei Jue passed on, it was snowing. (Each true god has an element each, I think Hei Jue’s element is fire.)
Shang Gu knew Tian Qi and Hei Jue are both killed and she went to confront Wu Huan. As she fought with her, both Tian Qi and Hei Jue appeared again as they feigned their own deaths to let Wu Huan show her demonic powers.
As they fought, the three of them combined are not Wu Huan’s match thus Hei Jue made Qingmu appear again! (To fight in Zhi Yang’s place) This is a huge highlight as we get to see Hei Jue being jealous of himself.
After Wu Huan is defeated, Hei Jue just made Qingmu disappear again.
Since Wu Huan’s been taken care of, Hei Jue will be going to take tribulation trial in Shang Gu’s place. We have a very sad episode (EP 48) of him saying goodbye to Yuan Qi and Shang Gu separately. He really wanted to hear Yuan Qi to call his father and he really wanted to say I love you to Shang Gu.
After he’s gone, Yuan Qi took the bracelet to Shang Gu saying that it suddenly broke. And that’s how Shang Gu got her memory back, like everything. She rushed to him for the last time but was too late, Bai Jue is gone.
In the last episode, we have Shang Gu moping around and then she decided to kneel at her father’s (Qian Kun Tai) to get Bai Jue back. And she kneeled for a good 500 years before she got her wish. Apparently if Bai Jue is gone, a new fire true god would be ‘borne’ and it was Bai Jue himself who came back!
Personally, I liked Bai Jue and Shang Gu’s love story – it was a good start for me and built the strong foundation to their love/story. Qingmu was too good to be true maybe that was Bai Jue’s subconscious being and Hei Jue was just irrational. Hou Chi has my heart with her strong portrayal as being helpless and losing Qingmu and Gu Jun.
All in all, it’s a good run. It maintained mostly at the #1 and #2 spot throughout its run as shown below (#1 on Sat 24 Jul still) even though there’s also criticisms and some negativity but the story is strong and fast-paced, great CGI effects, good actors and strong cast. What more can one ask for.
