Thousand Years For You (2022)

Starring Allen Ren JiaLun and Li Qin, Thousand Years For You <请君> looks epic at first glance, based on its premise of a general from many thousands year ago coming alive and looking for his love, almost like a promising epic love story between its leads, but it disappoints me in many ways. Thus far, I’ve watched until Ep 10 and does not think I will be going back to it. So many unfinished dramas these days.

Allen Ren is Lu Yan, a general from three thousands ago was woken up by Yu Deng Deng (starring Li Qin) coincidentally one day when she and her tribe are raiding some sort of a hidden cave with supposedly treasures to be found. No treasures were found and instead, she found Lu Yan.

Yu Deng Deng, being the chief of Qing Quan Village, has to find ways to feed her tribe/village, and her character is setup to be boyish/manly where she is finding a man to marry her so that she can get money to feed her village and of course, she is attracted to Lu Yan’s good looks and his money thus she wants him to marry her. Lu Yan finds Yu Deng Deng looking alike to his Goddess Yun Xi thus he plays along, wanting to find out who she really is, whether she is Yun Xi or with some co-relation.

A pity that there is no chemistry between the leads, I don’t see how he and her can be together in the drama. Allen Ren’s character is in constant frowning and looking like Li Qin has Covid or something, he can’t stand being close to her. On top of this, the story is not engaging and the love between the leads does not feel epic enough. Sometimes when a drama story is weak and when everything else fails, it can be saved by the OTP’s love or chemistry but here even the love cannot be felt.

If you are a fan of Allen Ren, yeah feel free to check it out, which is why I did, after watching him in Forever and Ever, but I guess the story and cast matters.

Streaming on TenCent/WeTV, if anyone is interested.
